Learn how to cook a whole chicken in your air fryer for incredibly crispy skin and moist, tender meat every time. This simple recipe delivers rotisserie-style perfection fast.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 whole chicken (about 3-4 lbs)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary
  • Optional: 1 lemon, halved
  • Optional: 4 cloves garlic, smashed

Instructions

  1. Remove the whole chicken from its packaging. Take out any giblets or neck from the cavity. Pat the entire chicken very dry using paper towels. This step is key for crispy skin.
  2. In a small bowl, mix together the salt, pepper, paprika, garlic powder, thyme, onion powder, and rosemary to create your seasoning rub.
  3. Rub the olive oil all over the exterior of the chicken. Sprinkle the seasoning rub evenly over the skin, making sure to cover all sides.
  4. If using, place the lemon halves and smashed garlic cloves inside the chicken cavity.
  5. Preheat your air fryer to 380°F (195°C) for 5 minutes.
  6. Carefully place the seasoned chicken breast-side up into the air fryer basket. Do not overcrowd the basket; the air needs to circulate.
  7. Air fry at 380°F (195°C) for 30 minutes.
  8. After 30 minutes, carefully pull out the basket and flip the chicken over using tongs.
  9. Continue to air fry at 380°F (195°C) for another 15 to 25 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C) in the thickest part of the thigh.
  10. Once cooked, remove the chicken from the air fryer. Let it rest on a cutting board for 10 minutes before carving. This resting period keeps the meat juicy.

Notes

  • For the best results, ensure your chicken fits comfortably in your air fryer basket with space around it for air circulation.
  • If your chicken is larger than 4 lbs, you may need to increase the cooking time slightly or lower the temperature to 360°F (180°C) to prevent the outside from burning before the inside is done.
  • Check the internal temperature with a meat thermometer; this is the most reliable way to confirm doneness.
