Ingredients
Scale
4 slices of quality bread (sourdough or whole grain recommended)
2 ripe Hass avocados
1 teaspoon fresh lime or lemon juice
Salt, to taste
Black pepper, to taste
For Variation 1 (Simple): Pinch of red pepper flakes
For Variation 2 (Egg Topper): 2 large eggs
For Variation 3 (Gourmet Feta): 2 tablespoons crumbled feta cheese
For Variation 4 (Vegan Crunch): 1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds
For Variation 5 (Protein Boost): 1/4 cup cottage cheese
Instructions
Toast the bread slices until they are golden brown and firm. This provides a good base for creamy avocado.
Cut the avocados in half, remove the pits, and scoop the flesh into a small bowl.
Add the lime or lemon juice, salt, and pepper to the avocado.
Mash the avocado with a fork. For creamy avocado toast, mash until mostly smooth. For smashed avocado toast, leave some small chunks.
Spread the mashed avocado evenly over the four slices of toast.
For Variation 1: Sprinkle red pepper flakes over the avocado layer.
For Variation 2: Prepare your eggs (fried or poached) and place one on top of each of two toast slices. Season the egg.
For Variation 3: Sprinkle crumbled feta cheese over the avocado on two slices.
For Variation 4: Sprinkle toasted sesame seeds over the avocado on two slices.
For Variation 5: Gently dollop cottage cheese over the avocado on two slices.
Serve immediately.
Notes
Use bread that is sturdy enough to hold the topping without becoming soggy. Toasting well is key for crispy toast avocado.
For the best flavor, season the avocado mixture generously before spreading it on the toast.
If you prefer a smoother texture, use an immersion blender or food processor for your avocado base.
