Learn the simple, no-fuss method for baking sweet potatoes that results in a creamy interior and perfectly caramelized skin. This is your guide to achieving the best baked sweet potato for any meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 medium sweet potatoes
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or avocado oil
  • 1 teaspoon coarse salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Scrub the sweet potatoes well under running water to remove any dirt. Dry them completely with a paper towel.
  3. Pierce each sweet potato several times deeply with a fork. This allows steam to escape and prevents bursting.
  4. Rub the entire surface of each potato with the oil.
  5. Sprinkle the salt and pepper evenly over the oiled skin of each potato.
  6. Place the seasoned sweet potatoes directly onto the middle oven rack. Do not use a baking sheet or foil for the best crispy skin.
  7. Bake for 45 to 60 minutes. The time depends on the size of your potatoes. They are done when the skin is slightly crispy and you can easily pierce the center with a fork.
  8. Remove from the oven and let them cool for about 5 minutes before serving.
  9. Slice open lengthwise and serve immediately with your favorite toppings.

Notes

  • For faster cooking, you can microwave the potatoes for 3-5 minutes before baking.
  • If you prefer a softer skin, you can wrap the potatoes loosely in aluminum foil before baking.
  • These baked sweet potatoes are excellent for meal prep; store them whole in the refrigerator for up to four days.
