Ingredients
Scale
4 medium firm apples (like Honeycrisp or Fuji)
1/4 cup rolled oats
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
1/4 cup water
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a small baking dish.
Wash the apples. Use a melon baller or small spoon to carefully core the center of each apple, leaving about a half-inch of apple flesh at the bottom to hold the filling. Do not cut all the way through the bottom.
In a small bowl, mix the rolled oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
Stuff the oat mixture evenly into the cored center of each apple.
Place a small piece of butter on top of the filling in each apple.
Pour the 1/4 cup of water into the bottom of the baking dish.
Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until the apples are tender when pierced with a fork. Basting the apples with the pan liquid halfway through baking is optional.
Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving warm.
Notes
For a richer flavor, substitute maple syrup for the brown sugar.
If you prefer a softer texture, peel the apples before coring them.
Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of caramel sauce.
