Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound egg noodles
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup chopped yellow onion
  • 1 cup chopped celery
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 (5 ounce) cans tuna, drained
  • 2 cups (8 ounces) shredded cheddar cheese, divided
  • 1 cup (4 ounces) shredded Gruyere cheese, divided
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 cup crushed potato chips (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  2. Cook egg noodles according to package directions. Drain well and set aside.
  3. In a large skillet or Dutch oven, melt butter over medium heat. Add onion and celery; cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Whisk in flour until smooth. Gradually whisk in milk until the sauce is smooth and thickened.
  5. Stir in salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
  6. Fold in the drained tuna, 1 cup of cheddar cheese, 1/2 cup of Gruyere cheese, and Parmesan cheese.
  7. Add the cooked egg noodles to the cheese sauce and stir to combine.
  8. Pour the mixture into a greased 9×13 inch baking dish.
  9. Top with the remaining 1 cup of cheddar cheese and 1/2 cup of Gruyere cheese.
  10. If desired, sprinkle crushed potato chips over the top.
  11. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until bubbly and the cheese is melted and golden brown.
  12. Let stand for 5-10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For an even richer flavor, you can use a mix of cheeses like Monterey Jack or Swiss.
  • If you prefer a creamier casserole, you can add a can of condensed cream of mushroom soup to the sauce.
  • Freshly grated cheese melts better than pre-shredded cheese.
