Prepare juicy, flavorful honey garlic chicken skewers using your oven or grill for a quick weeknight meal or summer BBQ.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 lbs boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Wooden or metal skewers
  • Optional: 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons cold water (for thickening)
  • Optional: Sesame seeds and chopped green onions for garnish

Instructions

  1. If using wooden skewers, soak them in water for at least 30 minutes.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, honey, rice vinegar, garlic, ginger, sesame oil, and black pepper to create the marinade.
  3. Place the cubed chicken into a resealable bag or shallow dish. Pour half of the marinade over the chicken, reserving the other half for basting and serving.
  4. Marinate the chicken in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes, or up to 4 hours.
  5. Preheat your grill to medium heat (about 375°F) or preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  6. Thread the marinated chicken pieces onto the prepared skewers, leaving a small space between each piece. Discard the marinade that touched the raw chicken.
  7. For Grilling: Place skewers on the oiled grill grates. Grill for 10-12 minutes, turning occasionally, until the chicken is cooked through (internal temperature of 165°F). Baste with the reserved marinade during the last 3 minutes of cooking.
  8. For Oven Baking: Arrange skewers on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 15-18 minutes, flipping halfway through. Baste with the reserved marinade during the last 5 minutes.
  9. If you want a thicker sauce, pour the reserved marinade into a small saucepan. Bring to a simmer over medium heat. If thickening, whisk in the cornstarch slurry and cook until the sauce thickens slightly, about 1 minute.
  10. Remove skewers from heat. Brush with the thickened sauce (if using) and garnish with sesame seeds and green onions before serving.

Notes

  • For air fryer cooking, cook at 380°F for 10-12 minutes, flipping halfway, and brush with reserved sauce near the end.
  • You can substitute chicken thighs for breasts for a richer flavor.
  • Add vegetables like bell peppers or onions between the chicken pieces for vegetable kebabs.
