Make perfect, golden, fluffy French toast quickly using simple pantry ingredients. This foolproof recipe delivers a custardy center and crisp edges every time.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt
  • 12 slices thick bread (Brioche or Texas Toast work best)
  • 2 tablespoons butter, for cooking

Instructions

  1. In a shallow dish or pie plate, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until fully combined. This is your foolproof French toast batter.
  2. Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add about 1 tablespoon of butter and let it melt until it sizzles lightly.
  3. Dip one slice of bread into the egg mixture, letting it soak for about 15 to 20 seconds per side. Do not over-soak; you want the center custardy, not soggy.
  4. Place the soaked bread onto the hot skillet. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes per side, until the French toast is golden brown and cooked through.
  5. Add more butter to the skillet as needed between batches.
  6. Serve immediately with your favorite toppings, like maple syrup or fresh fruit.

Notes

  • For extra fluffy French toast, use slightly stale or thicker-cut bread.
  • If you want a richer flavor, substitute half of the milk with half-and-half.
  • Wipe the skillet clean between batches if butter starts to brown too quickly.
