Make the best homemade applesauce on the stovetop. This quick recipe uses simple ingredients to create naturally sweet, flavorful applesauce perfect for snacks, baking, or a cozy side dish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 lbs apples (like Gala or Fuji), cored and roughly chopped
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Place the chopped apples, water, and lemon juice into a large pot.
  2. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat.
  3. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally until the apples are very tender.
  4. Remove the pot from the heat. Stir in the ground cinnamon and nutmeg.
  5. For smooth applesauce, use an immersion blender or carefully transfer the mixture to a standard blender and process until smooth. For chunky applesauce, mash the apples lightly with a potato masher.
  6. Serve the homemade applesauce warm or chill it completely before serving as a healthy snack or side dish.

Notes

  • For a naturally sweeter applesauce, choose naturally sweet apples like Fuji or Honeycrisp.
  • This recipe is great for meal prep; homemade applesauce freezes well for up to three months.
  • If you prefer a less tart flavor, you can substitute the water with apple cider.
