An easy make-ahead holiday breakfast casserole infused with the rich, creamy flavor of eggnog and warm spices, perfect for a festive Christmas morning.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf (16 ounces) day-old French bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 cups eggnog
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Optional toppings: whipped cream, extra cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Arrange the French bread cubes in a single layer in a greased 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, eggnog, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, salt, and vanilla extract until well combined.
  3. Pour the eggnog mixture evenly over the bread cubes, ensuring all pieces are moistened. Press down gently to submerge the bread.
  4. Cover the baking dish and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the bread to soak up the liquid.
  5. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Bake the casserole uncovered for 45-55 minutes, or until puffed up, golden brown, and set in the center. A knife inserted near the center should come out clean.
  7. Let the casserole rest for 5-10 minutes before serving.
  8. Serve warm, with optional toppings like whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon.

Notes

  • Using day-old bread helps it absorb the liquid better and creates a softer texture.
  • For a richer flavor, you can use a high-quality, thick eggnog.
  • If you don’t have allspice, you can omit it or use an extra pinch of cinnamon and nutmeg.
  • This casserole can be assembled the night before and baked in the morning.
