Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1 (14.5 ounce) can diced tomatoes, undrained
  • 1/4 cup water or beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1/2 head of cabbage, thinly sliced (about 4 cups)
  • 1/2 cup cooked rice (optional)
  • Shredded cheese for topping (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large oven-safe skillet or Dutch oven, brown the ground beef over medium-high heat. Drain off any excess fat.
  3. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet. Cook until the onion is softened, about 5 minutes.
  4. Stir in the tomato sauce, diced tomatoes (with their juice), water or broth, Worcestershire sauce, dried basil, and dried oregano.
  5. Season with salt and black pepper to your liking.
  6. Add the thinly sliced cabbage to the skillet. Stir well to combine everything. If you’re using cooked rice, stir it in now.
  7. Cover the skillet with a lid or aluminum foil.
  8. Bake for 30-40 minutes, or until the cabbage is tender and the casserole is heated through.
  9. If desired, sprinkle shredded cheese over the top during the last 5-10 minutes of baking.
  10. Let it rest for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a vegetarian option, substitute the ground beef with plant-based crumbles or extra vegetables like mushrooms and bell peppers.
  • Feel free to add other vegetables like carrots or bell peppers for extra flavor and nutrition.
  • Adjust the seasonings to suit your taste. A pinch of red pepper flakes can add a little heat.
