Ingredients
Scale
1 bottle (750ml) dry red wine (like Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon)
4 cups apple cider
1/2 cup brandy or applejack
1/4 cup orange liqueur (like Triple Sec or Cointreau)
In a large pitcher or punch bowl, combine the red wine, apple cider, brandy, and orange liqueur.
Add the sliced orange and apple to the pitcher.
Tuck in the cinnamon stick, star anise, and cloves. Add any optional garnishes like cranberries or ginger slices.
Stir everything gently to combine.
Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld.
Before serving, stir the sangria again.
Pour into glasses filled with ice. You can add fresh fruit slices to each glass if desired.
Notes
For a non-alcoholic version, omit the wine and spirits and use extra apple cider, perhaps with a splash of cranberry or pomegranate juice for color and tartness.
Adjust the mulling spices to your preference. You can add a few slices of fresh ginger for an extra kick.
Make sure to use a good quality apple cider for the best flavor.
The longer the sangria chills, the more the flavors will develop.
