Ingredients
Scale
14 ounces sweetened condensed milk
10 ounces dark chocolate chips or chopped baking chocolate
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Zest of 1 large orange
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder, for rolling
1 tablespoon orange zest, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
Place the dark chocolate chips in a medium, heatproof bowl.
In a small saucepan over medium heat, warm the sweetened condensed milk until it just begins to steam around the edges. Do not let it boil.
Pour the hot condensed milk over the chocolate chips. Let it sit undisturbed for 5 minutes to melt the chocolate.
Add the vanilla extract and the 1 teaspoon of orange zest to the bowl. Whisk the mixture gently until it is completely smooth and uniform.
Cover the bowl and chill the mixture in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours, or until firm enough to scoop.
Pour the cocoa powder into a shallow dish.
Use a small cookie scoop or spoon to portion out the chilled mixture. Roll each portion quickly between your palms into a smooth ball.
Roll each truffle in the cocoa powder until fully coated.
Place the finished truffles on a parchment-lined tray. If desired, sprinkle with a tiny bit of fresh orange zest before serving or storing.
Notes
For a vegan option, substitute the condensed milk with a canned vegan condensed coconut milk alternative.
If you prefer a coating other than cocoa powder, use finely chopped nuts or powdered sugar.
Store truffles in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.
