Make the rich, creamy, and garlicky Alfredo sauce famous at Olive Garden right in your kitchen in under 20 minutes. This recipe yields a restaurant-style sauce perfect for pasta or dipping.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 1/2 cups freshly grated Parmesan cheese, plus more for serving
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, or to taste
  • Pinch of nutmeg (optional)

Instructions

  1. Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Add the minced garlic to the melted butter and cook for about 1 minute until fragrant. Do not let the garlic brown.
  3. Pour in the heavy cream and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, stirring occasionally. Reduce the heat to low.
  4. Whisk in the grated Parmesan cheese slowly until the sauce is smooth and fully incorporated. Continue stirring until the cheese is melted.
  5. Season the sauce with salt, pepper, and the optional pinch of nutmeg.
  6. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes more, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens slightly to your desired consistency.
  7. Remove from heat immediately and serve hot over cooked fettuccine or use as a dip for breadsticks.

Notes

  • Use freshly grated Parmesan cheese for the best melting quality and flavor; pre-shredded cheese often contains anti-caking agents that can make the sauce grainy.
  • If the sauce becomes too thick upon standing, whisk in a tablespoon of milk or reserved pasta water to thin it slightly.
  • For a richer flavor, you can substitute half of the butter with cream cheese.
