Ingredients
Scale
4 Tablespoons all-purpose flour
4 Tablespoons granulated sugar
2 Tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
Pinch of salt
3 Tablespoons milk (any kind)
1 Tablespoon vegetable oil
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 Tablespoon chocolate chips (optional)
Instructions
Find a standard, microwave-safe mug (about 10-12 oz size).
Add the dry ingredients: flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt directly into the mug. Use a small fork to mix these thoroughly until no clumps remain.
Add the wet ingredients: milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry mixture in the mug.
Mix everything well with the fork until you have a smooth batter. Scrape down the sides to make sure all the flour is incorporated. Do not overmix.
Stir in the chocolate chips, if you are using them.
Place the mug in the microwave. Cook on high power for 60 to 90 seconds. Cooking time varies based on your microwave wattage; start with 60 seconds.
Check the cake; it should look set on top but still slightly moist. If it looks wet, microwave in 10-second increments until done. Be careful not to overcook, or it will become dry.
Let the mug cake cool for one minute before eating directly from the mug.
Notes
For a fudgier texture, reduce the milk by 1 teaspoon.
You can easily make this a protein mug cake by substituting 1 Tablespoon of flour with 1 Tablespoon of your favorite chocolate protein powder.
Top your warm mug cake with a scoop of ice cream or a dusting of powdered sugar before serving.
