Create a gourmet Red Wine Mushroom Burger featuring a rich red wine mushroom sauce and sweet caramelized onions for a fancy, comforting meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20 recommended)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 8 ounces cremini mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup dry red wine (like Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon)
  • 1/4 cup beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 4 slices provolone or Swiss cheese
  • Butter for toasting buns

Instructions

  1. Shape the ground beef into four equal patties. Season both sides with salt and pepper.
  2. Heat half the olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and cook slowly, stirring occasionally, for 15-20 minutes until deeply caramelized and sweet. Remove onions and set aside.
  3. Add the remaining olive oil to the same skillet. Add the sliced mushrooms and cook until they release their liquid and turn golden brown, about 8 minutes.
  4. Add the minced garlic and thyme to the mushrooms. Cook for one minute until fragrant.
  5. Pour in the red wine, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Let the wine reduce by half.
  6. Stir in the beef broth. Let the sauce simmer until it thickens slightly, about 5 minutes. Keep the sauce warm.
  7. Cook the burgers in a separate pan or on a grill to your desired doneness, about 3-4 minutes per side for medium.
  8. During the last minute of cooking, top each burger with a slice of cheese and let it melt.
  9. Lightly butter the cut sides of the buns and toast them until golden brown.
  10. Assemble the burgers: place a cheesy patty on the bottom bun, top generously with the red wine mushroom sauce, and finish with the caramelized onions. Place the top bun on.

Notes

  • Use a good quality, dry red wine for the best sauce flavor.
  • For extra richness, you can add a teaspoon of Dijon mustard to the mushroom sauce at the end.
  • If you prefer a vegetarian option, substitute the beef with a thick portobello mushroom cap or a high-quality veggie patty.
