Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes
  • 1/4 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
  • 6 medium apples (such as Honeycrisp, Fuji, or Gala), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 2 tablespoons salted caramel sauce, for drizzling

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine 1 tablespoon flour, 1/4 cup granulated sugar, 1/4 cup brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and 1/4 teaspoon salt.
  3. Add the rolled oats to the dry ingredients and mix well.
  4. Add 1/2 cup flour, 1/4 cup brown sugar, and 1/4 teaspoon salt to a separate bowl.
  5. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  6. Stir in the chopped nuts, if using.
  7. Arrange the sliced apples in a greased 8×8 inch baking dish.
  8. Pour the oat mixture evenly over the apples.
  9. Bake for 35-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.
  10. Let cool slightly before drizzling with salted caramel sauce.

Notes

  • For an extra layer of flavor, you can add a pinch of cardamom to the apple mixture.
  • Ensure your butter is very cold for the crispiest topping.
  • If you don’t have salted caramel sauce, you can make your own or use regular caramel sauce with a pinch of sea salt added.
