Ingredients
Scale
1 pound bulk pork sausage
1 large apple, peeled, cored, and diced
1 cup diced yellow onion
1 cup diced celery
4 cups cubed day-old bread (about 8 slices)
1 1/2 cups chicken broth
1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
1 teaspoon dried sage
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
Salt and black pepper to taste
2 tablespoons butter, melted
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Butter a 9×13 inch baking dish.
In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned. Drain off any excess grease.
Add the diced apple, onion, and celery to the skillet with the sausage. Cook until the vegetables are softened, about 5-7 minutes.
In a large bowl, combine the cubed bread, cooked sausage mixture, chicken broth, parsley, sage, and thyme. Season with salt and pepper. Mix well to combine.
Transfer the stuffing mixture to the prepared baking dish. Drizzle the melted butter over the top.
Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the stuffing is heated through and the top is golden brown.
Notes
You can use any variety of apple you prefer, but a tart apple like Granny Smith will provide a nice contrast to the savory sausage.
For a crispier topping, you can broil the stuffing for the last 1-2 minutes, watching carefully to prevent burning.
Day-old bread works best for stuffing as it absorbs moisture better. If your bread is fresh, you can toast it lightly in the oven before cubing.
