Ingredients
Scale
4 lb pork shoulder (Boston butt)
1 cup water
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
1/4 cup brown sugar
2 tablespoons smoked paprika
1 tablespoon kosher salt
1 tablespoon black pepper
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
Instructions
Place the pork shoulder in the bottom of your slow cooker.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the water, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, smoked paprika, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper to create the cooking liquid.
Pour the liquid mixture over the pork shoulder in the slow cooker.
Cover the slow cooker and cook on low for 8 to 10 hours, or on high for 4 to 5 hours, until the pork is fork-tender.
Remove the pork from the slow cooker and place it on a large cutting board. Discard any large pieces of fat.
Shred the pork using two forks.
Return the shredded pork to the slow cooker and toss it with some of the cooking liquid remaining in the pot to keep it moist.
Serve the crockpot pulled pork on buns for BBQ pulled pork sandwiches.
Notes
For the best flavor, look for a pork shoulder with good marbling.
If you prefer a thicker sauce, remove the pork, then simmer the remaining liquid on the stovetop until it reduces slightly before mixing it back in.
This recipe freezes well for easy freezer friendly dinners.
