Make this incredibly easy Slow Cooker Steel-Cut Oatmeal with Apples overnight. You wake up to a warm, perfectly cooked breakfast with no morning fuss. It is a comforting start to your day.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups steel-cut oats
  • 4 cups water
  • 2 cups milk (dairy or non-dairy)
  • 1 large apple, peeled, cored, and diced
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Lightly grease the inside of your slow cooker.
  2. Combine the steel-cut oats, water, milk, diced apple, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt in the slow cooker.
  3. Stir everything well until the sugar dissolves slightly.
  4. Cover the slow cooker and cook on LOW for 6 to 8 hours, or on HIGH for 3 to 4 hours.
  5. Check for desired consistency before serving. Add a splash more milk if it is too thick.
  6. Serve warm with your favorite toppings.

Notes

  • You can use apple pie spice instead of separate cinnamon and nutmeg.
  • For a richer flavor, use half-and-half or heavy cream instead of some of the milk.
  • Do not rinse the steel-cut oats; the starch helps create a creamy texture.
  • This recipe freezes well for quick future breakfasts.
