A warm and inviting spiced cranberry mulled wine recipe, perfect for holiday gatherings. This festive drink combines red wine with aromatic spices and tart cranberries, creating a delightful beverage that embodies the spirit of the season.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 750 ml bottle of dry red wine (like Merlot or Zinfandel)
  • 1 cup fresh or frozen cranberries
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup (or to taste)
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 4 whole star anise
  • 8 whole cloves
  • 2 strips orange peel (from about 1/2 an orange)
  • Optional: 1/4 cup brandy or spiced rum

Instructions

  1. In a large pot or Dutch oven, combine the red wine, cranberries, orange juice, maple syrup, cinnamon sticks, star anise, cloves, and orange peel.
  2. Stir everything together and place the pot over medium heat.
  3. Heat the mixture gently until it is hot but not boiling. You should see steam rising.
  4. Reduce the heat to low and let the mulled wine simmer for at least 30 minutes, or up to 1 hour, to allow the flavors to meld. Stir occasionally.
  5. If using, stir in the brandy or spiced rum during the last 10 minutes of simmering.
  6. Strain the mulled wine through a fine-mesh sieve into a heatproof pitcher or directly into mugs, discarding the solids.
  7. Serve warm, garnished with fresh cranberries, a cinnamon stick, or an orange slice, if desired.

Notes

  • For a non-alcoholic version, substitute the red wine with cranberry juice or a blend of grape and apple juice.
  • Adjust the maple syrup to your preferred sweetness level.
  • You can prepare the mulled wine ahead of time and reheat it gently before serving.
