Prepare impressive steak crostini featuring tender steak slices, creamy horseradish sauce, and sweet caramelized onions on toasted baguette rounds.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound sirloin steak or filet mignon
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 baguette, sliced into 1/2-inch rounds
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons prepared horseradish sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon fresh chives, chopped

Instructions

  1. Season the steak generously with salt and pepper. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the steak for 3 to 4 minutes per side for medium-rare. Remove the steak from the skillet and let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing thinly against the grain.
  2. While the steak rests, melt butter in the same skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook slowly, stirring occasionally, for 20 to 25 minutes until deeply caramelized and soft. Add the beef broth during the last 5 minutes to deglaze the pan and scrape up any browned bits. Set aside.
  3. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Arrange the baguette slices on a baking sheet. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, flipping halfway through, until lightly golden and crisp.
  4. In a small bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, horseradish sauce, and Dijon mustard until smooth. Stir in the chopped chives.
  5. To assemble the crostini, spread a thin layer of the creamy horseradish sauce onto each toasted bread slice. Top with a small amount of caramelized onions. Place one or two thin slices of steak on top of the onions.
  6. Serve immediately or at room temperature.

Notes

  • For a balsamic glaze variation, skip the beef broth and onions. Instead, drizzle store-bought balsamic glaze over the steak before serving.
  • You can toast the bread slices up to one day ahead of time and store them in an airtight container.
  • Use a sharp knife to slice the steak thinly for the best presentation on the crostini.
