Ingredients
Scale
1 bottle (750ml) dry red wine (like Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon)
1/2 cup orange juice
1/4 cup brandy (optional)
1/4 cup maple syrup or honey
1 orange, thinly sliced
1 apple, thinly sliced
1 cinnamon stick
3 star anise
4 whole cloves
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Instructions
Combine red wine, orange juice, brandy (if using), and maple syrup or honey in a large pot or Dutch oven.
Add the sliced orange and apple, cinnamon stick, star anise, cloves, and nutmeg to the pot.
Stir everything together.
Heat the mixture over medium heat until it is warm and simmering, but not boiling.
Reduce the heat to low and let it simmer gently for at least 20 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
Taste and adjust sweetness if needed.
Serve warm in mugs, garnishing with fresh fruit slices and a cinnamon stick if desired.
Notes
For a non-alcoholic version, use cranberry juice or grape juice instead of wine and omit the brandy.
You can prepare this sangria a few hours in advance and reheat it gently before serving.
Feel free to add other fruits like cranberries or pears.
Adjust the spices to your preference.
