Create a beautiful, trendy Vintage Blue Ombre Cake perfect for a coquette-style birthday celebration. This cake features soft pastel blue shades blending seamlessly for a show-stopping look.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box white cake mix (plus ingredients called for on box)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • Food coloring (sky blue, navy blue, white gel paste)
  • 2 cups unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 4 cups powdered sugar, sifted (for frosting)
  • 1 teaspoon clear vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the cake batter according to the box instructions, adding the flour and extra sugar for a richer texture.
  2. Divide the batter evenly into three separate bowls.
  3. Color the first bowl a very pale blue, the second a medium pastel blue, and the third a deeper blue, leaving a small amount of batter white.
  4. Grease and flour your cake pans. Layer the colors into the pans to encourage the ombre effect during baking, starting with the darkest color at the bottom or alternating layers.
  5. Bake the cakes as directed. Let them cool completely on a wire rack.
  6. Prepare the buttercream: Beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar, alternating with small amounts of heavy cream and clear vanilla extract until you reach a smooth consistency.
  7. Divide the buttercream into four portions. Leave one portion white. Color the remaining three portions in graduated shades of blue, matching the cake layers if possible, or use slightly lighter shades than the cake.
  8. Level the cooled cake layers. Place the darkest layer on your serving plate or cake stand.
  9. Frost the first layer with the darkest blue frosting. Place the next layer on top and frost with the medium blue frosting. Top with the final layer and frost with the lightest blue or white frosting.
  10. Apply a thin crumb coat of white or very light blue frosting over the entire cake and chill for 15 minutes.
  11. Apply the final layer of frosting. Use an offset spatula to smooth the sides, gently blending the colors where they meet to achieve a soft, vintage ombre look.
  12. Decorate as desired for a coquette style (e.g., with pearl sprinkles or delicate piping).

Notes

  • For the best ombre effect, use gel food coloring. Liquid coloring can thin your batter or frosting too much.
  • Make sure your butter for the frosting is truly at room temperature for smooth mixing.
  • Chill the cake between layers if it becomes difficult to handle or frost.
