- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Combine the sugar, water, cocoa powder, and salt in a small saucepan.
- Place the saucepan over medium heat. Whisk the mixture constantly until the sugar dissolves and the mixture begins to simmer.
- Reduce the heat to low and let it simmer gently for about 1 minute, stirring occasionally. Do not boil rapidly.
- Remove the saucepan from the heat. Stir in the vanilla extract.
- Allow the syrup to cool slightly. It will thicken as it cools.
- Pour the finished syrup into an airtight container for storage.
Notes
- For a thicker syrup, simmer the mixture for an extra 2-3 minutes after the sugar dissolves.
- Store this syrup in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
- Use this syrup to make chocolate milk by mixing 2 tablespoons into 1 cup of cold milk.
- Substitute the granulated sugar with an equal amount of brown sugar for a deeper molasses flavor.
